ANTI-SYSTEM

"at what price is freedom?"
Year:  2017
Country:  UK
City:  Bradford
Label:  Boss Tuneage
Format:  LP
Tracks:  10
Time:  30 min.
Lyrical themes:  anarchism, pacifism
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk        Hardcore

Anti-System are a anarcho-punk band active in the 80s. They are regarded as an influential band in the crust punk genre. Original line up consisted of Phil, George, Dom and Dave damned on vocals, following their first gig at the Palm Cove in Bradford, dave Damned was replaced by Nogsy. Formed in Bradford in 1981, with a line-up of Phil(Drums), George(Bass), Nogsy (Vocals) and Dom Watts (Guitar) the band recorded a demo whose tracks found their way onto a Pax Records compilation. Their debut release was the five-track 'Defence of the Realm' EP which was followed (on Reconciliation Records after the closure of Pax Records) with the 'No Laughing Matter' album and the 12" 'A Look at Life' EP. Like some other anarcho-punk bands of the time the band were promoters of animal rights causes, their debut EP being a benefit for animal welfare groups and prior to the recording of the A Look at Life EP there was a necessity for a new line-up as two of the original members had been imprisoned for various animal rights actions. Mark Keane and Michael Teale were imprisoned in 1986, shortly after recording "a look at life" in 1986. The band come back in 2014 and recorded new stuff in 2017 through also british label "Boss Tuneage Records", an album full of agressivity, speed, noise and political lyrics. The issue had two different cover, back and artwork, which you can see here below. ANTI-SYSTEM are young again no doubt!

LITTLE MURDERS

"and stuff like that"
Year:  2016
Country:  Australia
City:  Melbourne
Label:  Swerve
Format:  CD
Tracks:  12
Time:  30 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:         Mod         Hard Rock

Named after the 1971 Alan Arkin-directed film, Rob Griffiths formed Little Murders in 1979 and they soon became the most influential mod band during the late '70s and early '80s in Melbourne, Australia. The band's debut single, "Things will Be Different"/"Take Me I'm Yours," (December 1979), quickly sold its initial 1000 copies and remains a classic Australian pop record of the time. They released two more singles on the Au-go-go label: "High School"/"Trouble With Love" and "She Lets Me Know"/"It's Over." Guitarist/vocalist Rob Griffiths released the single "Melody"/"Waiting" during this time under the name Dance Set in 1981. By 1982 the lineup comprised Rob Griffiths, Rod Hayward on guitar, Chris Hunter on bass, and Michael Barclay on drums. Unable to secure a new record deal, Griffiths broke up the band in December 1983. The band had a revival of sorts in 1985 when Polyester Records issued the "100 Drugs"/"The Beat Goes On" single (recorded in 1983 and 1979, respectively). Au-go-go issued the retrospective album of singles and unreleased work titled Stop! in 1986. A full revival followed in late 1995 when Griffiths recorded a new album, ...And Stuff Like That, with Rod Hayward, Phil Wales (guitar), Craig Pilkington (guitar), Tony Ennis (bass), and Dave Foley (drums). The album was released in June 1997 and comprised new and previously released material. Griffith's took Little Murders on the road with another lineup consisting of Tony Ennis, Paul Thomas (guitar), and Michael Barclay (drums) from Weddings, Parties, Anything. Their second album, First Light, was released on the Swerve label in September 1998 and produced the singles "10,000 Guitars" and "Andy Warhol Retrospective." ~ Brendan Swift

ENTOMBED

Country:  Sweden
Label:  Earache
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  9
Time:  43 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk         Death Metal

Clandestine is the second studio album by Swedish death metal band Entombed. It was released on November 12, 1991, in Europe, and on February 11, 1992, in North America. It helped establish a distinctively Swedish sound in the death metal genre. This is the only Entombed album on which original vocalist L.G. Petrov does not appear and despite the whole is quite death metal, all songs here are full of rhythms, structures and speed closer to punk rock, hardcore and besides british band Discharge (with their typical D-Beat style).

"wolverine blues"
Year:  1993
Country:  Sweden
City:   Stockholm
Label:  Earache
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  9
Time:  35 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk        Metal

swedish band started in 1987 under the name "Nihilist", which changed to Entombed in 1989. They started as death metal band, but they evoluted mixing all sort of music styles such as: garage rock, punk rock, hardcore, thrash metal, heavy metal and rock'n'roll. Sometimes they have not well accepted by the ortodox metal-heads but just the opposite for those who are not Metal followers. This "wolverine blues" could be their best example to show their attraction to bristish legend band Discharge, and in general all scandinavian punk hardcore bands as: Anti-Cimex, Driller Killer, Disfear, Mob 47, Totalitär, etc. If you like Discharge ‎"hear nothing see nothing say nothing" or "never again", it's your are going to love this album.

"DCLXVI to ride, shoot straight
and speak the truth"
Year:  1997
Country:  Sweden
City:  Stockholm
Label:  Music for Nations
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  14
Time:  39 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Punk        Heavy Metal

This is the fourth album by the band Entombed, released in 1997. DCLXVI is 666 in Roman numerals. The cover art features a statuette of the Aztec god Mictlantecuhtli. This album shows a continuation of the metal punk sound previously established on 1993's "Wolverine Blues", but eschews most traces of hardcore and death metal in favor of a punk rock, garage rock and heavy metal influenced sound. Entombed are the originators of that extremely low, evil guitar sound, that became a trademark for Swedish death metal and many bands who also wanted that sound. It was year 1990 when the band's debut album 'Left Hand Path' came out, sending waves for years to come. But Entombed themselves began to include more rock'n'roll and punk music influences on their third album already, the legendary platter 'Wolverine Blues'. Brilliant album.

"same difference"
Year:  1998
Country:  Sweden
Label:  Music for Nations
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  13
Time:  44 min.
Genre:  rock
Style:        Alternative Rock

"same difference" is the fifth full-length album by swedish band Entombed. It was released in 1998. This album shows the band moving into a commercial alternative rock sound, and is generally considered the band's weakest moment both by fans, and by the band's former vocalist, LG Petrov. Why is it alternative rock? Well, because there is that rock and roll feel throughout the entire album, provided by the paced drums, the pummeling repetitive guitars and the swingy mood they convey. Apart from that, there is that heavy down-tuned feel portrayed by the atmosphere created around every single track, one that will resemble something in the vein of a slowed down Nirvana, Pearl Jam or Soundgarden, 90's era (the songs “Clauses” and “Kick in the Head” being fit examples), or even a spaced out Stone Temple Pilots from their early 90’s works (in songs like “Same Difference” or “High Waters”). You will eventually find yourself nodding confidently to these tunes, because they invade your brain and linger inside addictively. Despite all, I definitively like this album.

ED GEIN

"smoked + bad luck"
Year:  2017
Country:  US
City:  Syracuse
Label:  Hex
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  16
Time:  32 min.
Lyrical themes:  social issues, politics
Genre:  rock
Style:        Grindcore

It’s always nice to see that cover art isn’t a dying detail in today’s downloading-obsessed times, and this latest from grind/hardcore guys Ed Gein entices with not only an excellent album title, but very cool art as well — showing humans with Mack trucks as heads. This New York-based trio are armed with a political lyrical edge to boot, which helps give an extra push to their tunes. With an equally skilled take on grind, hardcore, punk and sludge, Ed Gein tend to keep their songs short and sadistically violent. (The band’s motto, after all, is "Go fast!”) With all three members singing, the urgency of the frantic music is escalated into realms of AmRep-style noise rock and angry punk; while no one player sticks out as being particularly proficient on his instrument, the three no doubt gel together perfectly. With cool, angular, driving bass lines keeping the rhythm underneath the noise, this never degenerates into something too unhinged; although the listener would be hard-pressed to remember one of these songs when all is said done, it still resembles music. Somehow managing to pay homage to both Unsane and Napalm Death at once. The band's lyrics, primarily written by bassist Aaron Jenkins, are politically charged and features social commentary, on topics including racism, sexism, homophobia, animal liberation, etc. this bass-heavy, extremely cathartic release is highly recommended.

STRIKE ANYWHERE

"exit english"
Year:  2004
Country:  US
City:  Richmond
Label:  Jade Tree
Format:  CD, LP
Tracks:  12
Time:  28 min.
Lyrical themes:  social issues, politics
Genre:  rock
Style:        Pop        Punk       Hardcore

Strike Anywhere emerged in 1999 from Richmond, VA. Vocalist Thomas Barnett (ex-Inquisition), guitarists Matt Smith and Matt Sherwood, bassist Garth Petrie (ex-Count Me Out), and drummer Eric Kane took a staunchly political and activism-minded approach to hardcore and punk traditionalism, drawing comparisons in both sound and vision to such stalwart acts as Avail and 7 Seconds. After an initial EP, Chorus of One, Strike Anywhere (named such after an old Inquisition song) joined up with Jade Tree, which issued Change Is a Sound in August 2001. Exit English followed in 2003, and the rarities collection To Live in Discontent in January 2005. Strike Anywhere hooked up with Fat Wreck Chords for their next full-length, Dead FM, released in June 2006. Tours both home and abroad followed through the next year; Sherwood amicably parted ways with the band in March 2007 to be able to settle down at home ~ Johnny Loftus
